Position Summary

The Division of Graduate Studies serves as the gateway and official school of record for graduate students at Jackson State University (JSU).

The Dean of Graduate Studies serves as the chief administrator for all graduate programs within the university’s colleges and schools. This position is responsible for oversight and management of the graduate student application, admission, registration and enrollment processes. The Dean of Graduate Studies also monitors and records academic progress and oversee the awarding of graduate degrees. He/She also ensures that the policies, guidelines and regulations established by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, the Office of the President, and the Division of Academic Affairs are followed. The Dean also has oversight of personnel, financial, and administrative affairs of the unit, and will be responsible for communicating the vision and goals of the division to students, faculty, the community and professional constituencies.

The Division of Graduate Studies is under the purview of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the chief academic and strategy officer for the University. All academic and related units, (including the colleges and departments, the library, undergraduate studies, graduate studies, international initiatives, faculty development, academic program development and review, and academic diversity) report to the Provost.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Education

Candidates for the position of Dean must have a terminal degree and a minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of post-degree experience directly specific to the college.

Minimum Required Experience

• Five to seven (5-7) years of significant work experience in higher education that would qualify you for the academic rank of full professor.

• A background of college-level research and teaching in your area(s) of expertise.

• A minimum of five (5) years of successful managerial and administrative experience as a department chair, assistant/associate Dean, or other comparable administrative experience.

• A strong record of developing or implementing creative career development and professionalization programming for graduate students and post-docs.

• A record of current and past scholarly/creative and professional activities.

• A demonstrated record of strong and consistent teamwork and collaboration with faculty, administrators, staff and students.

• An ability to communicate and to engage effectively with a wide range of constituents within and outside of the university.

• A demonstrated ability to raise private funds for professorships, programs, facilities and other college needs.

• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Consults with the Provost and other deans concerning policy matters and operational procedures relating to graduate students.

• Serves as an advocate for graduate education.

• Participates in maintenance of a university catalog for matters of graduate education.

• Assists with the development of existing and new graduate programs, including graduate programs that span disciplinary boundaries.

• Serves as Chair of the Graduate Council, consulting with the Council on matters of educational administrative policy and interdisciplinary academic matters.

• Coordinates efforts to provide recruiting, admissions, orientation, advising, mentoring and support services for graduate students.

• Develop and maintain the budget(s) for the Division.

• Assign and direct the work of the Associate and/or Assistant Deans of the Division of Graduate Studies.

• Assists graduate programs in maintaining programmatic, student and alumni data.

• Assists graduate programs in competing for external funds from foundations and agencies that support graduate training.

• Develop and administer the University-wide graduate fellowship programs.

• Participates in development efforts in cooperation with the Office of the President and the Vice President for University Advancement for support of graduate programs.

• Develop, stimulate, and maintain academic and scholarly programs that encourage cooperation and interaction among the graduate programs of JSU and various external constituencies including other academic institutions, government and community agencies, business, and the arts.

• Implements the policies of the University and the Graduate Education Strategic Plan.

• Performs other duties as assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
