Position Summary

The Dean of Undergraduate Studies provides guidance and leadership for campus-wide student success programs that serve students from orientation through graduation. This individual works closely with the Deans, department chairs, faculty, and staff across the university, and provides vision, leadership, and direction for university-wide efforts to increase retention and strengthening of academic support services. The Dean of Undergraduate Studies facilitates reviews and oversees the development of new and revised general education courses and curriculum; works with faculty and administrators on academic planning and policy pertaining to general education programming; oversees activities and services for academic engagement for students; and manage all student success and retention initiatives for the University.

The Division of Undergraduate Studies is under the purview of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the chief academic and strategy officer for the University. All academic and related units, (including the colleges and departments, the library, undergraduate studies, graduate studies, international initiatives, faculty development, academic program development and review, and academic diversity) report to the Provost.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Education

Candidates for the position of Dean must have a terminal degree and minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of post-degree experience directly specific to undergraduate studies.

Minimum Required Experience

• Five to seven (5-7) years of significant work experience in higher education that would qualify you for the academic rank of associate or full professor.

• A background of college-level research and teaching in area(s) of expertise; a record of current and past scholarly/creative and professional activities.

• A minimum of five (5) years of successful managerial and administrative experience as a department chair, assistant/associate Dean, or other comparable administrative experience.

• A strong record of developing or implementing student success programs, creative career development and professionalization programming for students.

• A demonstrated record of strong and consistent teamwork and collaboration with faculty, administrators, staff and students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• An ability to communicate and to engage effectively with a wide range of constituents within and outside of the university.

• A demonstrated ability to raise private funds for scholarships, programs development, and other college needs.

• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills; sound fiscal and resource management capabilities.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides leadership, vision, and direction for campus-wide student success programs and initiatives, promote a culture of undergraduate persistence and achievement, and lead efforts to increase retention and strengthening of academic support services.

• Consults with the Provost and other Deans concerning policy implementation and operational matters relating to undergraduate students, their advisement, and success.

• Assures that the institution meets the needs of students, and oversees various administrative functions for the undergraduate area, including planning and budgeting.

• Manages programs that serve students throughout their undergraduate experience, ensuring such programs meet current and future needs of students.

• Oversees the First and Second Year Experience initiatives.

• Review and facilitate the development of new and revised general education courses and curriculum.

• Works with faculty and administrators on academic planning and policy pertaining to the general education.

• Oversee activities and services for academic engagement for students, and manage all student success initiatives for the University, including honors programs, learning communities, bridge programs, etc.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
